ROBERT JOSEPH ROMBOUSEK, MATAMORAS, PENNSYLVANIA

Robert Joseph Rombousek of MatamorasPA went home to Jesus on  Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.  The son of the late Frank W. Rombousek and Mary (Strasser) Rombousek , he was born October 8, 1937 at St. Francis Hospital in Port Jervis, NY.  He was 78 years old.

Robert was raised in Port Jervis until his mother’s death when he was 8 years old. He then went to live with his late maternal Aunt Elizabeth Strasser Hannel and her husband Joseph Hannel, and his cousin/sister the late Roseline (Hannel) Mongeluzzi.  He returned to Port Jervis in the 1960’s where he married his late wife Virginia (Ingrassia) Rombousek.  They were married for 9 years prior to her death in 1973.

A family statement reads: “Dad was very community minded and was a hard worker.  He worked as a teacher at Minisink Valley High School for 30 years until he retired in 1992. While there he spent many years as Senior Class Advisor, Yearbook advisor Youth  and Government Advisor and Union Rep. During the summers, Dad would work as a carpenter, plumber and jack of all trades to support his family.  Dad was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church for the last 45 years, and was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers.  He was a proud volunteer fireman, Past President and Secretary with Fowler Rescue and Salvage Company #3 in Port Jervis for 52 years where he spent many years as secretary.  He was a member of the BPOE Elks of Port Jervis since 1992, and was a Past Exalted Ruler and served as Chaplain.  Dad spent many years teaching CPR and EMT with his good friend, Nelson Quick.  He is a past Zoning Officer of Matamoras, and had served on the Borough Council.   In his younger years he loved to fish, hunt, carve, hunt for fossils and “putter in his workshop” until the Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s slowly stole him away.  He loved classical music and operas.  He loved his grandchildren, who always made him smile. Dad had his own special language that always made his children and grandchildren laugh.” 

Robert is survived by his second wife of 41 years, Candace (Cooper) Rombousek, his son retired Senior Chief, Gerald and his wife Elaine (Roberts)  of Virginia Beach, daughter Donna Davey and her husband Frank of Port Jervis, daughter Jessica Rombousek, his daughter Sarah Pflanz and her husband Michael of Matamoras.  He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren Erin Cloud and her husband Joel, Shawn Rombousek, Corrine Rombousek and her companion Fred Jacobs, Tayah, David, Jordan , Karah, Olivia Rombousek, Daniel  and Rachel Pflanz, Chelsea Segarra and his 5 great grand-children Aaliyah, Ethan, Carmella and Julian Ford, and Jayce Jacobs. Robert is also survived by his “adopted children”, Scott Yeager and his wife Paige, the Helms family: Mary Renee Simonsson, Albert and John Helms, Dawn Dorcas, and the Fedorka family:  Lisa Brocky, Trisha Keeling, John and Kelly Lynn.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Rombousek.  He has several nieces and nephews and many who called him “Papa”.

Waiting for him at Heaven’s gate along with previously mentioned family are his daughter Elizabeth, his grandson Charles Pflanz, and his brothers, Frank, Eugene and sister-in-law Doris Rombousek.

Visitation  will be held Friday, March 4 from 2-4 and 6-9 PM at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY.  Port Jervis Lodge of Elks will conduct memorial services at 7:30 PM  and Firematic services at 8 PM.  Prayers will be offered 9 AM Saturday, March 5 th at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Matamoras, PA.  Rev. Gregory Kelly will be the celebrant.  Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis.

The family is asking for friends to wear bright colors to celebrate Bob’s life and any former Minisink students to wear something green if coming to the viewing. It would be appreciated that they write a little something about their memories of “Mr. Rombo”, to be shared with his grandchildren.  Please make any memorial donations to  the “Robert Rombousek Scholarship Fund”.
