MARGARET ELIZABETH (BETTY) HANKINS

Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Hankins

Mom went to be reunited with her husband, George and her youngest daughter, Marie on Saturday, September 19, 2015  at Goshen, NY.  She was the daughter of John Emmet Kline and Cora May nee Worden Kline.  Betty was born in the Tri States section of Port Jervis on July 10, 1921.  The family moved to the West End section of Port Jervis when she was six.   She spent the next 86 years as a Westender and 70 years of those in the home built by her father-in-law.

As a lifelong resident of West End she could give you a detailed history of the families who lived there.  Most adults now living in or around Port Jervis and grew up as children in West End in the late 50's through early 70's will probably remember Mrs. Hankins.  Mom did not work outside the home, her mission in life was to be a good mother and homemaker.  Consequently she was Mom or Grandma to many of our friends who came to play in our yard.  When it became apparent that she could no longer live alone she moved to Goshen to live with her eldest son and finally to Valley View in Goshen where she remained until her death, although in her heart she was always in Port Jervis.

Betty was an active member and sometimes officer  of the West End School PTA.  She was also  a member, junior choir director and Sunday School teacher at the West End Reformed Church and Brownie leader for many years.

She is survived by a daughter Margaret Slaughter of Port Jervis, and four sons George and his wife Barbara of Goshen, Bill and his wife Kathy and John and Dorie of Port Jervis, and Jim and his wife Marty of Hudson, NH. She had seventeen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was predecased by her husband, George W. Hankins, her daughter Marie her son-in-law William J. Slaughter III,  her two brothers John Emmet Kline and Worden Kimble Kline.  Visiation will be held Monday, September 21, from 4-7 PM at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY.Graveside services will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 11 AM at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis.  Rev. William  A. Harris, U.L. C.  will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Laurel Grove Cemetery, Assoc., PO Box 207, Port Jervis, NY 12771 or to the Valley View Center, 2 Glenmere Cove Rd., Goshen, NY 10924.  Arrangements are by the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Valley View for the care and compassion they afforded our Mom during her stay at Valley View.  For information, directions or to send a condolence note to the family visit knight-auchmoody.com.

ERIC D. POLLARD, BARRYVILLE, NEW YORK

Eric D. Pollard, age 97 of Barryville, NY passed away Friday, September 4, 2015, at

home with his family by his side. He was born on November 30, 1917 in Manchester,

England, the son of Thomas Sr. and Lilly Roscoe Pollard. Eric was predeceased by his

wife of sixty-seven years, Iris Hissey Pollard who passed away last year at the age of 95.

After Eric's childhood immigration to the United States, he was raised and schooled in

Wakefield and Ramsey in Upper Michigan where he met his beloved Iris on a tennis

court and were married. He helped build the main highway from upper Michigan to

Detroit where he relocated before serving our country as a decorated soldier in the US

Army during World War

Returning from the war he was employed at General Motors in Detroit and worked his

way up to General Manager at Detroit Transmission. He enjoyed an early retirement and

traveled the states camping, which included a snoring buffalo under their camper with the

herd standing by! Eric was an avid boat and fisherman on the Great Lakes which

included the excitement of flipping his sailboat, mast upside down, for fun! He loved the

outdoors, excitement and adventure.

He was an industrious and a skilled builder and wood craftsman. He built three homes,

helped repair churches, instrumental in the construction of a Lion's Ilan and piping in

water lines to Harsens Island where he and iris initially retired. When Eric and Iris

relocated to Sebastian, Florida, his drive for community improvements and service

continued. He also developed a talent for oil painting, clock making, loved making

music on his violin, when he could conjure up an audience!

For the past ten years Eric and Iris resided with their daughters, enjoying the beautiful,

peaceful atmosphere of family life in the woods and all it entails. He helped take care of

his beloved wife and was at her bedside when she passed.

Eric was a generous man who loved his family, friends, church and country. He had an

acute sense of English humor, often only detected by a slight grin he would try to hide or

the twinkle in his blue eyes!

Eric is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Gausden and Sandra Doe of Barryville, his

lovely sister Mary Cooprider of Garden City, MI, grandchildren Kenneth Doe and wife

Jean of Sparrow Bush, NY, Nadine, Brent and his wife Adrianne Gausden of CA. and
