Elizabeth “Betty” Goodfellow LynchFebruary 4, 1928 – March 10, 2015Port Jervis, New York
Elizabeth “Betty” Lynch, age 87 of Port Jervis, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Place, Bon Secours Hospital, after a long illness. A nearly lifelong resident of the garden spot of America, better known as West End, Betty was the bandagerof skinned knees; the provider of popsicles, juice boxes and candy; and the final arbiter of childhood disputes and grievances. She was what every mother, grandmother, and great grandmother should aspire to be, kind to a fault and generous with her kisses and her patience, which were both apparently limitless. She is survived by her son, William and his wife Sandy Lynch, of Prunedale, CA; herdaughters, Susan and her husband Jack Scully, of Eldred, Mary Grace Carlton, of Port Jervis, Patty and her husband Brendan Hess, of Port Jervis, and Melissa McCann and Michael McCann, of Port Jervis; and her beloved grand-children Andy, Steven, Jerry and Greg Lynch; Tim, Joe and John Scully; Autumn, Seth and Marissa Carlton; Rachel Rivera (Hess), Amanda Silko (Hess) and Tricia Hess; and Cassie, Nicole, Joshua and Cody McCann, and yes there are 17 of them, and ten great-grandchildren (Alex, Bryanna, Charlotte, Peyton, Jack, Nicholas, Ben, Henry, Ella and Taylor); sister; Joan Donahue, of Dallas, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry “Brud” Lynch; her grandson, Ryan McCann; her son-in-law, Michael Carlton; her brothers, William Goodfellow and Jack Goodfellow; and her sister, Marie Goodfellow Perkowski .
Betty celebrated her birthday a little more than a month ago the way that she lived her life, surrounded by her loud, active, argumentative, always loving family. She was the glue that held the ever expanding clan together and the oil that made it all run smoothly. She was the best of Jackie O, Julia Child, and June Cleaver, all rolled into one. She made Sunday dinner every single weekend for as long as any of her grandchildren can remember, and it was always a family event, winter or summer, holiday or not. In the summer time, her back patio was the place for fresh corn on the cob, homemade sun tea that had been brewing all day long, and an endless supply of freeze pops. Hers was the house where all river trips began and ended, and she was the coordinator of summer vacations to the shore every year for 20 plus years, always including as many of the family as were around and could make it there that week. We will all universally miss her gracious smile, gentle laugh and soothing kiss.
She graduated from Packard College with a Secretarial degree and worked for most of her life in jobs with the local government of the City of Port Jervis, including positions as an accounting clerk in the Water Department and secretary to the Mayor. She was the Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, the Scout Leader for the Girl Scout’s, and active in a number of civic organizations, including the St. Mary’s School Mothers Club and Catholic Charities. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a Lector for many years, as well as a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
