BETTY GORHAM SHAW, PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK

Betty Gorham Shaw, age 93, a longtime resident of Port Jervis, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Belle Reve, Milford, PA.Betty was a retired 1st grade school teacher at the Sullivan Ave. School for the Port Jervis School System, until her retirement in 1973.She was born in Phoenix, NY on February 9, 1916, the daughter of the late William H. Gorham and Mabel Burrows Gorham. Betty was a descendant of Nathaniel Gorham, one of the primary authors of the United States Constitution, and one of the Presidents of the United States under the Articles of Confederation.Betty married Guy H. Shaw on May 30, 1940, in Little Falls, NY. A former Director of Guidance in the Port Jervis School System, he predeceased her in 1999.She was a graduate of SUNY at Oneonta. She was a member of the Deerpark Reformed Church, Port Jervis, the Port Jervis Antique Study Club; the New York State Retired Teacher's Assn. and the Port Jervis Community Club.Betty is survived by her Goddaughter, Shelley Dickinson of Enfield, CT, and many close friends including, Elizabeth Dickinson of Matamoras, PA, Rev. Robert and Phyllis Foster of Port Jervis, and Richard and Debbie Parsons of Kennebunk, ME.Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. JOAN MARIE VLIET, MATAMORAS, PA.

Joan Marie Vliet, age 80, of Matamoras, PA, passed quietly on Monday, February 16, 2009 at St. Joseph's Place, Port Jervis, NY.She was born on May 14, 1928 in Washington (Warren County), New Jersey, the daughter of the late Joseph and Hilda Morris Sherry. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Lewis Vliet.A longtime resident of Sparta, NJ and New Bern, NC, she resided with her daughter Lisa Hunt and her family in Matamoras, PA for the past few years. Joan was a graduate of Hackettstown High School and Centenary Junior College. She was a retired Librarian for the Sparta Public Library in Sparta, New Jersey for many years and a past member of the Newton Country Club.Joan is survived by two daughters, Lisa Hunt and her husband, Michael of Matamoras, PA and Kathleen Mongiovi and her husband, Joseph of Wilson, NC; her son, James Vliet and his wife, Carmen of Centereach, NY; her grandchildren: Sarah, Rachel, Daniel, and Jessica Mongiovi, Bryan, Joseph, and Dana Hunt, Austin Vliet, Chrystal Bell, and Robert Miranda; her great grandsons, Frank Gould and Mitchell Conklin; her sisters, Betty Broere and her husband, John and Peggy Sherry; her brother, Joseph Sherry and his wife, Louise; a sister-in-law, Louise Sherry and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Sherry.A Mass of Resurrection will be held Thursday, February 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Matamoras, PA with Rev. ELSIE E. BISLAND, BRADENTON, FLORIDA, FORMERLY OF PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK

Elsie E. Bisland, age 89, of Bradenton, Florida and formerly of Port Jervis, NY, passed away February 6, 2009 in Florida.She was born on April 22, 1919 in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late August and Anna Carlson Sjoquist. She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Bisland, Jr. and Bernard O'Neill.She is survived by her daughter, Carol O'Neill of Bradenton, FL; two sisters, Alice Westfall of Port Jervis and Edith Nemeth of Boston, MA; two step-sons, Roger Bisland of Glen Spey, NY and Alfred Bisland of Panama City, Florida and several nieces and nephews.Spring interment will take place at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, NY. WILLIAM C. SHATT, MATAMORAS, PA.

William C. Shatt, age 86, of Matamoras, PA, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis.He was born on January 7, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Boltisheitis Shatt.Bill proudly served our country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Force, and was a member of the D&H Square Dancers. He was a retired airplane mechanic for small craft and inspector, he owned and operated Square Wheel Specialty Co., Susex, New Jersey.A family statement reads: "Bill was an avid aviator from the age of 19 until he was 85, he flew for 66 years. His plane, "Raggedy Ann", won many awards and was featured in Air Progress Magazine."He is survived by his wife at home, Marilyn Leffever Shatt; his son, Michael W. Shatt and his wife, Ellen of Dingman Twshp, PA; two daughters, Susan S. Hacker of Belvidere, NJ and Carol A. Washer and her husband, Robert of Belvidere, NJ; two brothers, John Shatt of W. Palm Beach, FL and Joseph Shatt of Green Valley, AZ; his sister, Mildred Olshevski of Willingboro, NJ; six grandchildren: Kimberlie, Kelly, Jason, Daniel, Jeffrey and Sara; three great grandchildren: Caitlin, Danielle and Kieran, and several nieces and nephews.Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 14, at 1 p.m. at the Hope Evangelical Free Church, Matamoras, PA, with Rev. Clara V. Schmalzle, age 85, late of Barryville, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Milford Senior Care Facility, Milford, PA.She was born November 16, 1923 in Dunmore, PA, the daughter of the late Matthew H. Vollmer and Hazel B. Swendsen Vollmer. Clara was married to Lewis J. Schmalzle for over 60 years. He predeceased her.She was a retired Home Economics and Health Teacher for the Eldred Central School, Eldred, NY. Clara was a member of the Barryville United Methodist Church, Barryville, NY for over 50 years, and lay preacher of the church. She was a member and past Matron of River Valley Chapter, O.E.S. #33, Port Jervis, NY; member of the Sullivan County of Home Economics Teachers for 20 yrs.; member of the New York State United Teachers Association; member of the International Skamper Camper Club, and a life member of the Yulan Rod and Gun Club.A family statement reads: "Mom loved to sew, cook, hunt, fish, and go camping, but above all, her family was most important to her."She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Barnes and her husband, Larry of Gouldsboro, ME, and Ginny Dudko and her husband, William of Sparrowbush, NY; her son, Donald L. Schmalzle and his wife, Cindy of Ellenville, NY; four grandchildren: Jennifer, Tricia, Amy, Laura; five great-grandchildren: David, Colin, Moira, Waylon and Norah; two brothers, Cecil Vollmer of Jacksonville, FL and Paul Vollmer of Dunnellon, FL; her sister, Carol Swingle of Ann Arbor, MI; several nieces and nephews. Joyce M. Spangenberg, age 78, of Port Jervis, NY, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY.She was born on August 25, 1930 at Middletown, NY, the daughter of the late Harold and Myrtie Smith.Joyce was a retired registered nurse for Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis for many years. She was a member of the Drew United Methodist Church, Port Jervis.A family statement reads: "Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and care giver, she was loved by all those she touched."Joyce is survived by her husband at home, Edward Spangenberg; two daughters, Janet Mikulak and her husband, Michael of Watertown, NY and Kim Hannigan and her husband, Donald of Port Jervis; two sons, Mark Spangenberg and Roy Spangenberg both of Port Jervis; seven grandchildren: Kelly, Nichole, Amanda, Samantha, Kati, Ashley, and Mary Jane; five great grandchildren; her brother, Harold Smith, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Attica, NY; and her sister, Karen Wyatt of Lawrenceburg, IN and several nieces and nephews. SHIRLEY CARLTON WARNSHUIS, PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK

Shirley Carlton Warnshuis, age 83, a lifelong resident of Port Jervis, NY, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2009, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY.Shirley was born July 17, 1925, at 15 Kingston Ave., Port Jervis, NY, the daughter of the late John and Grace McGaw Merkenschlager. She graduated from Port Jervis High School and married Robert Carlton in 1943.Following Robert's infantry service during World War II, the couple built their own home on North Orange St., in Port Jervis. Together they owned and operated The Carlton Jewelry Store across from the Erie Hotel. Having raised her family, Shirley entered nursing school at the age of 49 and graduated four years later as an RN. When she received her pin at the graduation ceremony, the person behind her in line was her son, Steven, who had attended the nursing program at the same time as Shirley. She retired from The Orange County Home and Infirmary at Goshen, NY, after many years of nursing. Shirley was deeply involved as a member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Port Jervis, for over 50 years and a member of the lunch bunch of the church.Shirley's first husband, Robert Carlton, died in 1993, just six months short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Following a three-year whirlwind romance, Shirley married Patrick Warnshuis from Portland, OR in 1999. The wedding took place at the First Presbyterian Church, with a glorious reception at the Eddy Farm Hotel.She is survived by her husband at home, Patrick Warnshuis; three sons: Robert Carlton, Jr. and his wife, Marge of Daytona, FL, Gerald Carlton and his wife, Blanche of Westbrookville, NY, and Steven Carlton and his wife, Connie of Kinston, NC; her daughter, Elaine Mills and her husband, Randy of Port Jervis, NY; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Mary Grace Carlton of Port Jervis; two sisters, Beatrice Smith of Port St. Lucie, FL and Ethel Osterhoudt of Montgomery, NY; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Michael J. Carlton.Friends may call Tuesday, February 10, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. HAROLD H. CONKLIN, PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK

Harold H. Conklin, 92, of Port Jervis died Jan. 23, 2009, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis.
He was born April 25, 1916, in Huguenot, the son of Peter and Lillian May Conklin.
Harold was retired from the Port Jervis Department of Public Works.
He was married to Willameena O. Rockefeller Conklin, who predeceased him.
He is survived by his son, Harold Conklin Jr.; two sisters, Katherine Innella and Myrtle Matthews, both of Port Jervis; and several nieces.
Funeral services were Monday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis.
Interment was private.

Robert Stevens, Sr., age 71, of Town of Westtown, passed away Monday, January 26, 2009 at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY.He was born on July 27, 1937 in Monroe, NY, the son of the late Oliver Lee Stevens, Sr. and Isabelle Barnes Stevens.Bob retired from Ford Motor Co., Edison, NJ. He married Rosemary Cosh Stevens who resides at home.He is also survived by his daughter, Linda Stone and her husband, David of Lawndale, California; two sons, Robert Stevens, Jr. of Mt. BARBARA A. WEIDNER, MILFORD, PA.

Barbara A. Weidner, age 65, of Milford, PA, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009 at her home after a long illness. Barbara was born in Callicoon, NY on January 9, 1944, the daughter of the late Norman and Margaret Myers Sutherland. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse with Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Newton, NJ. Barbara celebrated 44 years of marriage to Joseph P. Weidner , who survives at home. She is also survived by her two sons, Joseph P. Weidner, Jr. of Port Jervis and Christopher N. Weidner at home; her daughter, Patricia A. Hunt and her husband, James of Milford, PA; her brother, Norman W. Sutherland and his wife, Mary Ellen of Highland Lake, NY; her sister, Darlene Haas and her husband, George of Eldred, NY. Barbara is survived by six beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Meshnick and her husband, Burton, Joseph Weidner, III and his fiance, Kaily Phillips, Alicia and Kayla Weidner, Zachary, Matthew and Meaghan Rose Hunt; two nephews and her brother-in-law, David Weidner of Yarmouth Port, MA. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Barbara J. Weidner. Barbara was a longtime resident of Pike County and devoted her life to Nursing. Before her employment with Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Barbara worked at St. Francis Hospital, Port Jervis; Hillcrest Nursing Home, in Milford, PA, and All-Quality Care. She was also very active in her community. She was a member of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Matamoras, PA and past president of the Altar & Rosary Society of the Church; she was a member of the Milford Chapter of the American Cancer Society (Nurse of Hope), and a member of the Milford Garden Club. Lorraine E. Fowler, age 87, of Lords Valley, PA, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY.She was born February 28, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine McGuire Erben.Lorraine was a retired assembler for Milford Hall, manufacturer of Trophies in Milford, PA. She was a member of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Matamoras, PA and life member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Tri-State Naval Ship #7241, Port Jervis, NY.Lorraine married Walter John Fowler, who predeceased her. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Whelan and her husband, Kevin of Tappan, NY, and Kathleen Downing of Dingmans Ferry, PA; five sons: Walter (Red) Fowler and his wife, Nancy of Newton, NJ, Michael Fowler of Port Jervis, Jeffrey and Robert Fowler, both of Lords Valley, PA, Lawrence Fowler of Honesdale, PA; seven grandchildren: Beryle, Michele, Zackary, Daniel, Matthew Jacklyn and Chyna; three great-grandchildren: Olivia, Kristopher and Riley.A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 27, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's R.C.
