Our Obituaries: HENRY STENGEL, MATAMORAS, PENNSYLVANIA

Henry Stengel, 89, long time resident of 500 Avenue L, Matamoras, passed away July 3, 2014 at the home of his daughter and son in law, of natural causes.

Henry was born July 19, 1924 in Saint Gallen, Switzerland, son of Karl August Stengel and Anna Maria Katerina (Bischof) Stengel. He came to the United States as a young boy and lived in Brooklyn, New York with his parents, his brother Wilhelm (Willie) and his sister Ida. He attended the High School of Aviation Trades in Manhattan and worked for American Airlines as an aircraft mechanic on DC-3s at La Guardia field, until Nov. 1943, when he was inducted into the Army.

Henry was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps as a PFC; he was stationed as a Radar Operator in Co. D, 580th Signal Aircraft Warning Co. at Fort Schafter in Oahu, Hawaii where one of his duties was to assist in training night fighter pilots before their assignment to forward areas in the Pacific., and later as a First Lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve.

After the war Henry again worked for American Airlines in New York City as a file clerk, and then attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah for his Bachelor of Science Degree and later was awarded a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.

Henry was married to Ruth Marie Johnson February 5 1953 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York.

He worked for a time at the Architectural firm of Olmsted Brothers, after which he became employed by the Department of the Interior, U.S. Park Service, where he worked in both San Francisco, and Philadelphia, as well as several of the National Parks including Yellowstone National Park, as a Landscape Architect, Park Planner and Construction Coordinator. Henry worked on the designs for the landscaping around the St. Louis Arch.

In 1967 Henry emigrated to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada with his wife and children after he became employed by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development for the Government of Canada, the job from which he retired in 1981, before moving to Matamoras, Pennsylvania.

Henry was a lover of nature, trees and gardening. His Swiss/German heritage was a source of pride to him, and reflected in his personality. He was interested in photography, model railroading, stamps and coin collecting. He was a quiet, gentle man who cared for his family. He loved to sit and read the New York Times daily, work on the crossword puzzle - in pen - and was always well informed on current events and politics.

Henry was predeceased by his brother Wille, his loving wife Ruth, his sister Ida M. Scott, his brother-in-law Robert A DeStefano, and his sister in law Jean E. DeStefano.

Henry is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Karl Stengel and Monica (McIsaac) Stengel of Hillsdale Ontario; his son Henry Newell Stengel of Port Colborne Ontario; his daughter and son-in-law Jennifer Kristian (Stengel) Llewellyn and Randall Francis Llewellyn of Nanticoke, PA; his nieces Jean Elizabeth Sindall, Robin Deborah Saraceni, his nephews Robert Newell DeStefano and Russell Howard DeStefano, his granddaughters Casey Elizabeth Llewellyn, Sarah Katherine Llewellyn, his grandson Gerald John Stengel and his granddaughter Danielle Elyse Stengel.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 6, at 11 AM at the Milford Cemetery, Milford, Pennsylvania. Arrangements are by the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E.Main St., Port Jervis, NY. For information, directions or to send a condolence note to the family visit knight-auchmoody.com
