JOAN NORRELL BARAN, SHOHOLA, PA., FORMERLY OF PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK

Joan Norrell Baran age 73 of Shohola, PA, formerly of Port Jervis, NY passed away Monday, October 25, 2010 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. She was born on July 13, 1937 in Port Jervis, NY, the daughter of the late James E. "Alabam" Norrell and Marion Hart Norrell. Joan was a retired Patient Care Technician at St. Francis Hospital, in Poughkeepsie, NY and prior to that , worked at Bon Secours Community Hospital, in Port Jervis, NY as a Nurses Aid.
A family statement read; Mom was a master giver, protector, encourager, gatherer and more. She was truly authentic and “one of a kind” and taught us the true value of relationships and the critical purpose of reaching out to others in need. Humble and gentle, she had an incredible heart for people in general, in particular the “underdog”. She always knew how blessed she was, and continually proclaimed her thanks to God for all she had - on her knees in her daily prayer.
The first born of a family of eight - she truly loved and treasured all of her sisters and brothers. She glowed with enormous pride when it came to her four children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Always our #1 fan and supporter– no matter what. All was well with the world as long as her family was together. Completely selfless, she always made sure we had what we needed first and foremost.
Mom knew what she wanted, when she wanted it, and how she was going to get it - no one would tell her any different. She was quite the independent soul. She lovingly served others through her work at home, the hospital, church, and frequent family gatherings. She was assertive in her giving and often times challenged others to be mindful of the battles others were faced with every day.
A lover of the simple things in life; a sunrise or sunset, peeping crickets on a warm summer’s eve, the revving of hot car or Harley Davidson racing down the street, the embrace of her grandchild, thunder and lightning storms, crashing of the waves on the beach, jet engines at full thrust overhead, clear starry nights and magnificent moons. No matter what the moment brought, she absorbed it and cherished it.
She had a tremendous thirst for learning whether it was through books or TV or a simple conversation. She was curious about everything. She loved her rock’n roll (Led Zepplin, D. Bowie, Aerosmith, etc…). Judas Priest, Meatloaf and Robert Plant along with Joe Perry and Slash on their guitars absolutely blew her mind. Attending Woodstock II was one of the true highlights of her life.
With a keen sense of humor, smile, smirk and laugh, Mom’s presence would illuminate any room. An avid reader of books/novels – her favs included authors Lausbader, Clancy and Ludlow. She fulfilled her inner spirit of adventure through skydiving (for her 60th), bungee jumping, T-6 Texan aerobatic experiences and more!
Whenever or wherever your paths may have crossed– be it at the grocery store or the gas station, in the hospital or at the church, at the Flo-Jean, in the dentist/doctor’s office, or a heavy metal concert, you wouldn’t forget this little sparkplug. For it was the light in her eyes and the warmth of her smile and her gentle hello or “thank you” that made a mark in your heart. In the truest sense, our Mother LIVED and LOVED to the fullest and with all of her heart.
She is survived by her son Jeffrey Masurack of Port Jervis, NY, her 3 daughters; Laura May and her husband David of Shohola, PA, Heidi Falkowski and her husband Tom of Port Jervis, Diana Mann and her husband Michael of Milford, PA,her former husband, Elmer G.
