“I don’t know what I’d do without me,” was one of David W. Sparling’s favorite sayings. Now, his family and friends don’t know what we’ll do without him.
David died at home surrounded by loved ones on February 15, 2021, after a valiant battle with a prolonged illness.
Born in 1947, David was a graduate of Minisink Valley High School. He was drafted during the Vietnam War, and he served with the US Army Signal Corp in Germany. Following his service, David worked for Contel (now Frontier) as a communications technician.
After retiring from the phone company following 32 years of service, David then became a code enforcement officer and worked throughout Sullivan County.
Every few years, David would try out a new hobby. From mushroom growing and beer making to coin collecting and metal detecting, he was always trying something new. But his favorite activities included hunting, fishing, and target shooting. He was a member of the Glen Spey Rod and Gun Club and the Tristate Rod and Gun Club.
He loved cooking meals for his friends, neighbors, and family. Everyone was always welcome in Dave’s kitchen. One of his favorite places to visit was Chincoteague, Virginia, where he spent many summer vacations with family and friends.
David was proceeded in death by his parents, George Sparling and Winifred (née Kimble) Sparling. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon (née Carroll) (Glen Spey); his son Scott and his wife Kelli (Livingston Manor); his son Bryon and his wife Judi (Parker, CO); son Robert (Denver, CO); daughter Rebecca and her husband Paul (Shickshinny, PA); grandchildren Blake, Taylor, Audrey, Ben, and Amelia, several cousins and many friends and neighbors who have been like family to him over the years.
The family would like to thank David’s friends and neighbors for all the help they provided to us during his illness. He was truly grateful for your love and kindness.
