BEATRICE A. SMITH, PORT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA, AND PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK
Beatrice A. Smith passed away suddenly on October 19, 2013 in Manchester, CT. She was a long time resident of the tri-states area living in Port Jervis and Montague for most of her 93 years. After leaving the area in 2001, she and her husband lived in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, FL. “Bea” enjoyed Scrabble, Mah-Jongg, playing cards, bingo, bowling, reading, solving puzzles, doing needlework, and taking long walks. She took great pleasure in bird watching and inspired many others to enjoy nature. She moved to South Windsor, CT, in 2011 after her husband died.
Beatrice was born on September 5, 1920 in Port Jervis, daughter of the late John G. and Grace A. (McGaw) Merkenschlager. Her husband, Arthur W. Smith, predeceased her. She is survived by daughter Emily C. Zumpano and her husband Francis of South Windsor, CT; son, Thomas A. Smith and his wife Debora Valentine of Montague, NJ; 4 grandchildren, Adrien Raffia, Amy Short, Gretchen Brown & Erica Billups; 8 great grandchildren, Lauren and Kristen Raffia, Conor and Kaley Short, Ellie and Caleb Brown, Paige and Deacon Billups and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Gertrude Patterson, Ethel Osterhout, Evelyn Walter and Shirley Carlton Warnshuis.
Bea was graduated from Port Jervis High School in 1937 and married Art in October 1941. They began married life in Astoria, NY, but in Dec of 1943 Art entered the Army and served with the 150th Combat Engineers in the “Battle of the Bulge” during WW II. They made their home in Port Jervis following his discharge in 1945. Bea worked at the Flo Jean restaurant and volunteered at St. Francis Hospital as a “gray lady” for a number of years while also raising her children and working with her husband during the formative years of Smith Plumbing & Heating. She worked in the office of the radiology department of the hospital for several years prior to retirement.
A memorial service for Bea and Art will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday November 9th, 2013 at the Deerpark Reformed Church, 30 East Main Street, Port Jervis, N.Y. Pastor Ann Rost officiating . Interment will be at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush, N.Y. at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to a Charity of Donor's Choice. JOSEPH M. HESS, PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK
Joseph M. Hess, age 70 of Port Jervis, NY, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the Waccamaw Community Hospital, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Joe was born in Port Jervis, New York on October 2, 1943 , the son of the late Paul C. and Helen "Honey" McKeon Hess. Joe proudly served our country during the Viet Nam War, with the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Port Jervis, the Port Jervis Knights of Columbus, Council 471, the Port Jervis Lodge of Elks, # 645, B.P.O.E., and a member of Hose Co. #2, Port Jervis Fire Department. He worked as a Insurance Broker and was the proprietor of Joseph Hess Insurance Co, in Port Jervis. Joe is survived by his son, Steven Hess of Port Jervis, three brothers, John Hess and his wife Tina of Matamoras, PA., P.C. Hess and his wife Gerri of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brenden Hess and his wife Patti of Port Jervis, his two sisters, Marie Quick and her husband Sidney of Otisville, NY, and Maura Hendershot and her companion Roy Ochsen of Georgia, and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 7, at 10 AM at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Port Jervis, NY.. Rev. George Hafemann will be the celebrant. David M. Mickley age 53 of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and formerly of Port Jervis, NY, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia. David was born on June 20, 1960 in Port Jervis, NY, the son of David W. Mickley and Emily Hadlick Card. David served with the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring as a First Class Petty Officer. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his mother, Emily Card of Port Jervis, his father David W. Mickley and his wife Patricia of Virginia, two brothers, William Mickley of Chesapeake, VA, and Donald Mickley and his companion Pauline Taylor of Cuddebackville, NY, his sister, Lynn Lauber of New Jersey, his step-sisters, Mary Decker and her husband Stephen of Port Jervis, and Jane Cuddeback and her husband John of Clifton Park, NY, his step-brother Michael Card and his wife Diane of Morristown, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. David was pre-deceased by his step-father, Joseph Card. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 309 Ave F, Matamoras, PA. Rev. James Walsh will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, with military honors. Timothy I. Greening, age 61 of Drums, Pennsylvania and formerly long time resident of Milford, PA, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Geisenger Medical Center, Danville, PA. He was born on January 13, 1952 in Port Jervis, NY, the son of the late Allen J. and Patricia Borkenhagen Greening. Timothy was a Well Driller with the family business, Greening & Sons, Well Drilling, Milford, PA. He is survived by his, two sons, Sean Greening of Milford and Timothy A. Greening and his wife Carlee of Scott Run, PA., four sisters, Patti Sperling and her husband Arthur of Arizona, Cindy Denne and her husband John of Baker City, Oregon, AJ Greening of Concord, North Carolina, and Robin Mason and her husband Scott of Andover, New Jersey, his brother Brian Greening and his wife Vicki of Kannapolis, North Carolina, his grandson, Julius Jett Greening, his beloved long time friend, Sylvia Lau of Milford,, PA, his companion, Nancy Finn, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. THOMAS R. BURROW, SR., GLEN SPEY, NEW YORK
Thomas R. Burrow,Sr., age 94 of Glen Spey, New York , passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 at his home. He was born on June 20, 1919 in Cornwall, New York, the son of the late Joseph C. and Etta B. Weyant Burrow. Thomas was a retired tool and dye maker for Star Expansion, Inc, in Mountainville, NY. Tom married Virginia Cromwell who pre-deceased him. He is survived by his three sons, Robert J. Burrow of Barryville, NY, David Burrow of Olympia, Washington, and John C. Burrow of Glen Spey., his four sisters, Marion Charbonneau of Myakka, Florida, Alice Parry of Highland Falls, NY, Annie Calvet of Lake Forest, California and Betty Kaseler of Goshen, NY, his grand daughter Deirdre Dignetti and his great grand daughter, Cheyenne Makula and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his son Thomas R. Burrow, Jr. and his brother Joseph M. Burrow. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Ellen C. Barnes age 87, of Cuddebackville, New York, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. She was born on July 28, 1926 in Port Jervis, NY, the daughter of the late Cosmo and Anna Dolly Shay McKeeby. Ellen was a retired floor lady for Andmore Sportswear, Inc., in Port Jervis. She was a former member of the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis. Ellen married Bennett Barnes on February 17, 1946, and was pre-deceased by him on August 10, 2011. She is survived by her two daughters, Jonnie A. Woolsey of Cuddebackville, NY, and Tracey Abers and her husband Donald,Jr. of Okeechobee, Florida, two sons, Donald A. Barnes and his wife Cindy of Glen Spey, NY and Guy B. Barnes and his wife Kathy of Cuddebackville, NY, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ellen was pre-deceased by her son Kevin J. JOHN RAYMOND PATTERSON, JR., SPARROWBUSH, NEW YORK
John Raymond Patterson, Jr., age 88, of Sparrowbush, New York, passed away on October 13, 2013 in Kinderhook, New York. Born May 14, 1925 in Brooklyn, John (Jack) was the eldest son of John Raymond and Gladys Goss Patterson. He was predeceased in 2002 by his devoted wife of 48 years, Clara Stach Patterson. After graduating from Nyack High School, Jack served his country in the US Army Air Corps as a cryptographer in Europe during World War II and the Korean conflict. After many years working in Rockland and Orange County real estate, Jack joined his family at Eddy Farm Hotel and Resort as golf course superintendent. Most every day for 30 years, Jack could be found driving his golf cart with his favorite pet riding shotgun, whether it was a dog or a raccoon. One of his passions was spending his summer evenings dancing with guests to the Eddy Farm Orchestra. Although he never liked to see the Eddy Farm summer season end, he looked forward to October and the annual Halloween Party where he entertained the crowd dressed as everything from the Jolly Green Giant to Little Orphan Annie.
Jack is survived by his daughter Patricia Dowdell of Port Orange, Florida, his son Alan L. Patterson and his wife Susan of Kinderhook, New York, his brothers, Thomas Patterson and his wife Jen of Milford, PA, and Richard Patterson, of Goshen, NY, three grandsons, David Luke Pritchard, Jack Patterson and William Patterson. Jack is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and the greater Eddy Farm Family.
Jack was an officer of the Rockland County Rotary Club, lifetime member of the Pocono Turf Association, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Sparrowbush Fire Department, and the Pine Hills Cemetery Association.
A memorial service will be held at the Sparrowbush Methodist Church, 44 Main St., Sparrowbush, NY, Saturday, November 9th at 12:30 p.m. Rev. Amy Garrett will officiate. Interment will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush. A celebration of Jack’s life will follow at the place he loved more than anything in the world, Eddy Farm Hotel. Cornelia B. Miller , age 99 of Montague, New Jersey passed away October 18, 2013 at Matamoras, Pennsylvania. She was born in Prospect Park, New Jersey on July 28, 1914. Cornelia married Albert H. Miller, who pre-deceased her. She is survived by her son, Jacob A. Miller of Montague, NJ, seven grandchildren, Kim, Kristine, Jacob, Nicholas, Debra, Jackie and Albert and two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her son Albert Miller and Dena Wolfe. Services were private at the convenience of the family. Cremation took place at MacLennan Hall Crematorium, Milford, Pennsylvania. Beverly M. Belcher, age 82 of Port Jervis, New York passed away, Friday, October 11, 2013 at Milford Senior Care, Milford, PA. Beverly was born on August 21, 1931 in Port Jervis, New York, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Cron Hoar. She married Harry Belcher, who pre-deceased her on August 18, 2005. Beverly is survived by her 3 daughters, Irene Morgan and her companion Scott Turner, Janice Skelinger and Mary Martin and her companion Donald all of Port Jervis, her 4 sons, Kenneth Belcher and his companion Judy Schneider, Harry Belcher and his wife Rose, Ed Belcher, and Donald Belcher and his wife Debbie, all of Port Jervis. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Wagner and her husband William of Port Jervis 18 grandchildren , 29 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Beverly was pre-deceased by her son Richard Belcher, her sister, Belva Schwarz and her 3 brothers, Frank Wilson, Edwin Hoar and Eugene "Bud" Hoar. William J. "Skip" Halstead, age 65 of Hoboken, New Jersey and formerly of Port Jervis, New York passed away September 16, 2013 at Newark, New Jersey. He was born on July 12, 1948 in Port Jervis, New York, the son of the late Clarence and Helen Heater Halstead. Skip proudly served our country with the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War. He was a retired caller for New Jersey Transit at Hoboken, New Jersey. He is survived by his special friends, Joann Reilly and her granddaughter Mikayla Reilly both of Jersey City, NJ , his sister, Veronica "Ronnie" Halstead, his aunt, Betty Hartmann of Sparrowbush and several cousins.
