HARRY T. "BRUD" LYNCH, PORT JERVIS, NEW YORK
Harry T. “Brud” Lynch
January 9, 1924 – September 4, 2012
Harry Thomas Patrick Lynch, better known to all of us that knew and loved him as Brud, passed away at St. Josephs Place, Bon Secours Hospital, after a brief illness. “Brud” was short for his sister’s version of brother and it stuck for life. The son of Harry and Lillian Lynch, he was our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather of the plain and great variety, and friend to everyone he met.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Goodfellow Lynch, at home; his son, William and his wife Sandy Lynch, of Prunedale, CA; his daughters, Susan and her husband Jack Scully, of Eldred, Mary Grace Carlton, of Port Jervis, Patty and her husband Brendan Hess, of Port Jervis, and Melissa and her husband Michael McCann, of Port Jervis; and as he loved to say, eighteen grand-children (Andy, Steven, Jerry and Greg Lynch; Tim, Joe and John Scully; Autumn, Seth and Marissa Carlton; Rachel Rivera (Hess), Amanda Silko (Hess) and Tricia Hess; and Cassie, Nicole, Joshua and Cody McCann) and eight great-grandchildren (Alex, Bryanna, Charlotte, Peyton, Jack, Nicholas, Ben and Henry), numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and his “good old pup” Louie. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Anne Tracey and Lillian (Sis) Goodfellow, his grand-son, Ryan McCann, and his special son-in-law, Michael Carlton.
Brud was a proud resident of Port Jervis (specifically the “West End”), which was variously the garden spot of the world or a hidden submarine base, depending on which story he was telling at the time. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, or as he liked to say “travelling through England, Holland, Belgium, France and Germany.” He was an exceptional football player in both high school and at college, as well as in the army after the war. Brud was one of the founding members of the Port Jervis Pop Warner Football League and coached in that league for many years. He happily presided over Sunday dinner every week for years (his meatballs were excellent for an Irish guy), which always started with a Manhattan and ended with Butter Pecan ice cream. We’ll also always remember our yearly trips to the Jersey Shore, surrounded by family, which will never be the same.
He worked for many years as a driver for Port Jervis Trucking Co. and he retired from Delaware Valley Sand and Gravel Co. as a vice-president. Brud always had a smile and a wave, a hello and a chat with people passing by, a cup of coffee waiting in the morning, and time for a kickball game on Harold Street after work. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart.
Friends may visit Thursday, September 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 East Main Street, Port Jervis, New York. Prayers will be offered Friday, September 7 at 10:15 am, at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 50 Ball Street, Port Jervis, New York, with Rev. George Hafemann officiating.
Donations may be made in Brud’s memory and to honor the exceptional and caring staff at St Joseph’s Place to the Sunroom Project at St. Joseph’s Place, c/o Bon Secours Hospital, 160 East Main Street, Port Jervis, N.Y. 12771 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
