Dr. Sidney Rose, Greenville, New York

Dr.Sidney Rose, age 70, dedicated chiropractor to many residents throughout the tri-state area passed away on April 20, 2006 at his home.

He was dedicated to his profession always finding time (day, night or even during blizzards) to meet the needs of his patients for 46 years. He was a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He was a true professional, gentleman, loyal friend with a wonderful gift of making people laugh. He served two years in the US Army at Fort Devans, Mass.

Sid was born in Andover, New Jersey on November 28, 1935.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jean. They were married October 4, 1963. He was devoted to his family and is survived by a sister Mary Bernice Haegele and husband Ernie of Davenport, Fla.; a sister Charlotte Wilson and husband Billy of Fort Worth, Texas; brother George Rose and wife Ida Mae of Andover, N.J.; and brother John Rose of Sparta, N.J. In addition many loving nieces, nephews and their families throughout the tri-state area survive him.

He was predeceased by his brother Dr. Harold Rose; his brother Joseph Rose; his sister June Mitten; and a sister Marion Lewis.

For 20 years Sid was a resident and "gentleman farmer" of Greenville, N.Y. Even with his busy office schedule he found time to enjoy the animals, haying, restoring old tractors and participated in the tractor pull contest. Prior to moving to Greenville he lived in Montague, N.J. for 18 years and served as Mayor of Montague for eight years.

His outgoing personality, infectious smile and witty nature inspired all those fortunate enough to know and love him. His family feels blessed to have had his sunshine throughout these years and the opportunity to share in his energetic hobbies. He was always there for his family and friends in every way and he will never leave our hearts.

He was a member of the BPOE Port Jervis Elks Lodge #645; 32nd degree mason (Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite) and past patron of the Caleb Butler Lodge of Masons, F & AM, Massachusetts; member and past patron of the Melchoir chapter #131, Order of The Eastern Star ; Member and past patron Pocono Chapter O.E.S.; Member and past officer of Mongaup Rod and Gun Club and the Metauque Falls Sportsman Club; N.R.A.; Member of The Board of Directors for the Port Jervis Deerpark Humane Society.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Port Jervis. The Rev. Richard Hotzler will officiate.

Interment will take place at Andover Cemetery, Andover, N.J.

James L. Browning, Montague, New Jersey

James L. Browning, a retired Teacher for the Hanover Park Regional High School, E. Hanover, N.J., and head of the English Department, died Monday, April 17, 2006 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, N.Y. He was 78.

A longtime area resident, he was born October 8, 1927 in Newark, N.J., a son of the late James T. and Lillian F. Jones Browning.

Mr. Browning graduated from Montclair State College, earning his B.A. in English, Speech and Drama. He continued his education at Rutgers University, where he graduated with his Masters in Education Supervision; continued at multiple colleges, including Teacher's College, Columbia University, N.Y.C., and School of Speech at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He was a member and past President of the Port Jervis Erie Depot Preservation; member of the Board of Directors, Minisink Valley Historical Society; and Trustee of the Wallpack Valley Historical Society, Wallpack, N.J.

He is survived by two sons, Jonathan Browning of Montague, N.J., and Keith E. Browning of Flanders, N.J.; one daughter, Jennifer S. Benaglio of Somerville, N.J.; and six grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be private.

Wendy R. Worzel, Highland Lake, New York

Wendy R. Worzel, an advertising consultant for Narrowsburg Lumber Co. in Narrowsburg and lifelong area resident, died April 14, 2006. She was 39.

The daughter of Louis Reiser and Jean Burnham Bodens, she was born August 26, 1966 in Port Jervis.

She was a member of Eldred United Methodist Church; a Girl Scout Leader, Girl Scouts of America, Eldred; member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Lava Vol. Fire Dept., Lava, N.Y.; member of PTA of the George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School, Glen Spey.

Survivors include her husband Bruce S. Worzel at home; two daughters Carly and Kendall Worzel both at home; one son, Joshua Worzel at home; her mother, Jean Bodens of Narrowsburg; her father, Louis Reiser of Spring Valley; her sister, Jessica Reiser of Livingston Manor; two brothers, Douglas Reiser of Barryville; and Alan Reiser of Otisville; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Inc., 154 East Main St., Port Jervis on Monday, April 24 from 4-5 p.m.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, April 24 at 5 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Douglas Lee and Pastor Linda Bohs officiating.

Interment will take place at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, N.Y.

Ida M. Worzel, Hawley, Pa., Formerly of Pond Eddy, New York

Ida M. Worzel, of Hawley, Pa., formerly of Pond Eddy, a retired Post Master for the Pond Eddy U.S. Postal Service, and lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Hawley, Pa. She was 77 years old.

Daughter of the late Arthur and Louisa Kalin Turner, she was born in Glen Spey, N.Y. on Jan. 30, 1929.

Mrs. Worzel was a member of the First Baptist Church in Orange City, Fla.

The widow of Gordon E. Worzel, she is survived by one son, Bruce Worzel and his wife, Wendy, of Highland Lake; three daughters: Dorothy McGuire of Middletown, Dianne Schriver and her husband, Gary, of Hawley, Pa., and Judy Hallingstead and her husband, Jon, of Germansville, Pa.; one brother, William Turner of Fairfield, Va.; four sisters: Betty Lombardo and Joyce Smith, both of Orange City, Fla., Peggy Meyer of Pond Eddy, and Norma Ryerson of Odessa, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Gustav Turner.

Joseph C. Roeder, Yulan, New York

Joseph C. Roeder, Sr., a lifelong resident of the area and retired from the Matamoras Department of Public Works, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at Castle Point Veterans Hospital in Wappingers, N.Y. He was 89.

The son of the late Charles J. Roeder and the late Eula Mead Roeder, he was born March 27, 1917 in Port Jervis, N.Y.

He was married to the late Anna A. DeGraw Roeder.

Joseph was a member of the Roosa-Fleming V.F.W. Post #161; member of Port Jervis Lodge of Elks #645; and a 50-year member of the Matamoras Fire Department. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph Roeder, Jr. and his wife, Katherine, of Matamoras, Pa., and Charles Roeder and his wife, Gudrun, of Yulan, N.Y.; one daughter, Joann Howell and her husband, Don, of Matamoras, Pa.; two sisters, Eula Steiger of Port Jervis, and Gladys Love of Ocala, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends called on Monday, April 10 from 7-9 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Inc., 154 East Main St., Port Jervis, N.Y.

Funeral services took place on Tuesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Glenn Scheyhing officiating.

Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush.

John A. Ogrodnick, Port Jervis, New York

John A. Ogrodnick, a retired signalman for the Erie Railroad, Port Jervis, and lifelong area resident, died Thurs. April 6, 2006 at home. He was 78.

The son of the late Joseph and Sophie Babey Ogrodnick, he was born Feb. 14, 1928 in Port Jervis.

He was a member of St. Joseph's RC Church, Matamoras and a US Navy veteran of WW II.

He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children: Susan Bassimer Ogrodnick and is survived by his devoted and loving wife: Olga Kykish Ogrodnick. He was a devoted and loving father to his sons: Ken Ogrodnick and wife Jill of Fairfax, Va., Dennis Ogrodnick and wife Judy of Matamoras, Pa. and daughter: Bridget Snyder and husband Joe of Jupiter, Fla. He was a devoted and loving grandfather and great-grandfather to his grandchildren: Jennifer, Kortni, Christopher, Kimberly, Brandon, and Kaila Ogrodnick, Anthony, Jessica, Sydney and Tracey Snyder and great-granddaughter: Jade. Also survived by sisters-in-law: Rose and Viola Ogrodnick, Marion Timpone; brother-in-law, Robert Hissam; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Peter and Michael Ogrodnick and three sisters, Mary and Annie Ogrodnick and Catherine Hissam.

Friends may call Sunday, April 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Inc., 154 East Main St., Port Jervis. The vigil wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Prayers will be offered Monday, April 10 at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's RC Church, Matamoras, Pa. The Rev. August Ricciardi will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Jervis.

Dorothy E. Saunders, Port St. Lucie, Fla., Formerly of Port Jervis, New York

Dorothy E. Saunders, recently of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and lifelong resident of Port Jervis, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the Life Care Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was 87.

The daughter of the late Howard Runnalls and May Doolittle Runnalls, she was born September 7, 1918 in Otisville, N.Y.

Dorothy was a member of the Walton Road Baptist Church in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and was a member of the Sunday School and Mission Auxiliary of The Walton Road Baptist Church; former member of the First Baptist Church in Port Jervis; A.A.R.P.; Senior Friends on Port St. Lucie; and member of The Gideons International.

She was the widow of the late Guernsey "Al" Saunders.

She is survived by two daughters, Arlene Parker and her husband, Carl of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Susan Hancock and her husband, Tim, of Oxford, Pa.; grandchildren: Craig Parker of Memphis, Tenn., Dale Coleman of Champaign, Ill., Jill Seagren of Slate Hill, N.Y., Alysha Miller of Lancaster, Pa.; Amanda Skiles of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Abigail Hancock of Oxford, Pa.; two stepsisters, Bobbie Crine of Mt. Hope, N.Y. and Marie Kuhn of Port Jervis, N.Y.; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her grandson, Jeffrey Parker.

John T. Applegate, Sparrowbush, New York

John T. Applegate, a retired Carpenter for Nastasi & Co., Garden City Park, N.Y., and lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was 61.

The son of the late Harry L. Applegate and Florence E. Kuhn Applegate, he was born August 19, 1944 in Monticello, N.Y.

John was a 24-year member of Sparrowbush Engine Co. #1 Fire Department; the Big Bucks Hunting Club in Forestburg; and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America, Local #19.

Survivors include his wife, Joan E. Roda Applegate, at home; two daughters, Robin Lynn Bjorn and her husband, Tom, of Brunswick, Ga., and Brenda Sue Fediuk and her husband, Michael, of Hilton, N.Y.; two stepsons, Bob D. Fredricks and his wife, Janice, of Matamoras, Pa., and Steven Fredricks and his wife, Kelly, of Norwich, N.Y.; one stepdaughter, Jody Jo Ann Beck and her husband, William, of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; three sisters: Doris Dauch of Mongaup Valley, N.Y., Gloria Applegate of Sackett Lake, N.Y., and Dawn Swailes of Washington, Ill.; two brothers, Richard Applegate of Slate Hill and Robert Applegate of Forestburg; nine grandchildren: Rachael, Kirsten, Ian, Mackenna, Ian Wolfgang, Keegan, Forrest, Matt and Ally; and several nieces and nephews.

Marc E. Henry, Port Jervis, New York

Marc E. Henry, a longtime area resident and proprietor of Marc Henry Locksmith in Port Jervis, died Friday, March 31, 2006 at St. Joseph's Place in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was 47. The son of Edwin Henry, Jr. and Dorothy Shauhollis Henry, he was born March 26, 1959 in Hackensack, N.J. Marc attended the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis. He was also the locksmith for "Triple A", Auto Assistance. In addition to his parents of Tucson, Ariz., he is survived by his wife, Anastasia Starcev Henry, at home; two sons, George and Jonathan Henry, both at home; his sister, Debra Feliz of Mesa, Ariz.; his mother and father-in-law, Hilda and Ran Milovanich of Clifton, N.J.; two brothers-in-law, Alexander Starcev and Mickey Milovanich; one nephew and two nieces. Francis Edward McPeak, a lifelong resident of Sparrowbush, died March 30, 2006 at home. He was 50. The son of William McPeak and Marion Holly, he was born June 7, 1955 in Morristown, N.J. He owned Frank's Roofing & Siding in Sparrowbush, N.Y. The stepmother of his children, Mary Mabee McPeak, survivors also include six daughters: Michelle McPeak and Jason Gray of Wantage, N.J., Lisa Jugan of Hopatcong, N.J., Frankie and Angel Urbina of Newton, N.J., Patricia Ramirez of Dover, N.J., Tammy and Joel Espinosa of Newton, N.J. and Tasha McPeak of Montague, N.J.; two sons, Frankie McPeak, Jr. of Port Jervis, and Adam McPeak of Pennsylvania; 11 grandchildren: Leah, Johnny, Lisa, Emily, Amanda, Destiny, Selena, Bradley, Angelina, Monica, and Tyler; three brothers: Steven, Ralph, and William; two stepbrothers, Harry and William; four sisters: Gloria, Virginia, Marion, and Evelyn; two stepsisters, Sandra and Denise; a stepfather, William Dawson; a lifelong friend, Patricia Jugan; and best friends, Barbara and Bruce Winkler. Harold F. "Monk" Rake, Matamoras, Pa.

Harold F. "Monk" Rake, a lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at home. He was 70.

The son of the late Harold E. Rake and Lissetta Heater Rake, he was born August 19, 1935 in Port Jervis, N.Y.

Monk was a retired Engineer and Proprietor of 3-D Block Co. in Port Jervis; Delaware Valley Block; 4-D Door and Hardware, and High Falls Builders.

He was a 52-year member of the Matamoras Fire Department.

He was the widower of Helen L. Decker.

Survivors include two daughters, Tammy L. Klemm of Matamoras, Pa. and Bobbie Jo Muller and her husband, Kenneth, of Sparrowbush, N.Y.; his loving, long-time companion, Margaret Fuller of Cummins Hill, Pa.; one sister, Alice Poptic of Newton Falls, Ohio; five grandchildren: Nicole, Keri, Samantha Jo and Stephanie; and several nieces and nephews.

Stanley A. Mauric, Port Jervis, New York

Stanley A. Mauric, the Proprietor of Mauric Precision Machine in Port Jervis, and longtime area resident, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at St. Teresa's Nursing Home, Middletown, N.Y. He was 78.

Son of the late Jan Vlk and Antonie Mauricova Vlk, he was born May 5, 1927 in Laziste, Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Mauric was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He was married to the late Jarmila Karban Mauric.

He is survived by one daughter, Antoine Mahoney and her husband, Michael, of New York City, N.Y.; one son, Stanley J. Mauric and his wife, Jayne, of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Marie Paskova of the Republic of Czechoslovakia; three grandchildren: Erin, Peter and Jenny; and several nieces and nephews.

Hattie L. DeVore, Port Jervis, New York

Hattie L. DeVore, 78, of Port Jervis, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at her home.

The daughter of the late Frank and Serviss Taggart Weed, she was born January 10, 1928 in Bethel, N.Y.

Hattie was a retired Cook for St. Francis Hospital in Port Jervis, N.Y.; a retired Food Service Manager at A.H.R.C. in Middletown, and a retired Hostess for Homer's Coffee Shop in Port Jervis, N.Y.

She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Hose 5, Port Jervis Fire Department. Hattie was very active in all the activities that her children were involved in: Port Jervis P.T.A., Port Jervis Pop Warner Football; Port Jervis Little League, and was both a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader for many years.

A family statement reads: "Hattie loved all her family: children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her life and they'll miss her very much."

She is survived by one son, Robert DeVore of Port Jervis, N.Y.; two daughters, Serviss Scuorzo and her husband, George, of Savannah, Ga., and Laura May Haas and her husband, Herbert, of South Canaan, Pa.; her daughter-in-law, Terri DeVore of Port Jervis; seven grandchildren: Stacey Stewart and husband Greg, Nicole Lewis, Jody Scuorzo, Kristen DeVore, Danielle DeVore, Marie Haas, and John DeVore; and seven great-grandchildren: Gregory, Steffanie, Angelica, Sabrina, Sienna, Randy and Melissa Lewis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald E. DeVore, Sr.; her son, Donald "Ozzie" DeVore; her granddaughter, Tracy Scuorzo; two sisters, Helen Baker and Velmah Hagerman; and two brothers, James and John Weed.
