Nicholas Olenick passed away peacefully on February 23, 2016 at home with his family in Port Jervis, New York. He was born on March 21, 1922 to Andrew and Elizabeth Olenick. He was 93 years old.
During World War II he served in the 8th Air Force in Bassingbourn, England where he repaired damaged aircraft as an airplane mechanic and carpenter at his base. During this time in England he met his wife of 71 years, Sheila; they married and returned to his home where he pursued a career in the construction trade.
A family statement reads: Our Dad’s focus in life was his family and those close friends around him. He always paid special attention to his grandkids and great grandkids, and always made sure he knew how they were no matter where they lived.
He had a great sense of humor and was always ready to tell or listen to a good joke as was symbolized by a plaque that hung in the kitchen, “A husband is proof that a wife can take a joke.”
In his later years he spent his time making bird houses and lawn art for family and friends. If there’s a bird in the area without a home it’s not his fault. He was a resident exit greeter at ShopRite grocery and enjoyed the conversations with his senior friends on shopping day. We will all miss him dearly as he was one of a kind.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Olenick of Port Jervis; sons Andrew and wife Sherri, James and wife Nancy; daughter Theresa and husband Joseph; grandchildren Michael, Jason, Ethan, Heidi, Sarah and David; great grandchildren: Kodey, Hannah, Nicholas, Wyatt, Harlan, Tobias, Zeke, Emmett, William, Oliver, Benjamin and Natalie.
Nicholas was predeceased by sister Julia, brothers Paul and John, granddaughter Jennifer and grandson Aaron. Services will be private.
